Artist Profile: David Stephenson

Thursday, February 21, 2013

I came across the photography of David Stephenson this weekend and was immediately ooohing and awwwing at the detail, color, and architecture of the cathedrals he photographs. His photos remind me of the images from kaleidoscopes. His achievements and success are extensive. His work has been in numerous museums including the SFMOMA and the Metropolitan. He has two beautiful books, Heavenly Vaults and Visions of Heaven, under his belt and I'm dying to get my hands on them. He currently is a Professor of Art at the University of Tasmania, which just made him that much more interesting.

The domes are my favorite. Stunning is an understatement. I would love to get the book and maybe (nicely) cut a few pages out so I could frame them with extra large white mattes to really showcase the photos (off centered mattes would be so cool.) Have you guys seen the off centered mattes idea?

The vaults are just impressive because mostly all of them have towering stained glass windows and the intricacy in the design is almost unbelievable. Stephenson has truly captured the beauty and magic of these cathedrals like none other.

Check out more of David Stephenson's photography on his website. And don't you want to buy his books for your coffee table? So dreamy.

  1. Oh my gosh, those are incredible! I've never heard of him, thanks for sharing! The second to last picture is from Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. It is one of the most stunning places I've ever been to and somehow he managed to make it look even more beautiful. I definitely think you should buy one of his books and frame some of the pages!
